Newark native celebrates Sarh Vaughan with gusto:
by Zan Stewart/The Star-Ledger
Monday March 30, 2009, 3:19 PM
MARK DYE/THE STAR-LEDGER Carrie Jackson sing to a ull house at the Priory Restaurant and Jazz Club in Newark.
Employing her vibrant alto with spirit and swing, vocalist Carrie Jackson celebrated the 75th anniversary of Sarah Vaughan's birth Friday at the Priory in Newark.
Accompanied by an ace band -- pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Lisle Atkinson, drummer Gordon Lane, flutist Tony Signa, and tenor saxophonist James Stewart -- Newark native Jacskon sang songs recorded by Newark native Vaughan (1924-1990)
Jacskon kicked off with a percolating "Byue, Bye Blackbird," on which she displayed her characteristic approach. She rendered the first chorus with gusto, but stuck pretty close to the written song.
For the sencod and third choruses, she took liberties, sounding at points like a jazz horn as stretched out notes moved the melody around, made phrases more rhythmically emphatic.
"I've Got the World on a String" and "But NOt For Me" were similarly robust and hard-swinging. For ballads, Jacskon chose "Teach Me Tonight," "Embraceable You," and one of Vaughan's signature pieces, "Misty". Each boasted persuasive emotion and rich notes. Other winners: "Fly Me to the Moon," "Mean to Me," and "Broken Hearted Melody."
Throughout, Simmons supported Jackson with deft chords, Atkinson with fat bass lines, Lane with crsp time. Each had engaging solo moments, as did Signa and Stewart.
Zan Steart is the Star-Ldeger's jazz wirters. He is also a musician who prmorms at local clubs.
He may be reached at zstewart@starledger.com or at 973.324.9930

Ms. Jackson, I heard you when you came to our community Somerset Run in Somerset. My husband who is a "jazznut" was unable to come with me that night. I loved your voice, your phrasing and your son selections, but I did not hear enough of you! My friend who also loved you went to talk to you and your generously gave her a CD. The next morning when I was telling my husband waht he missed, he walked into the bedroom and came out with your CD! We listened to you in the car all day. This morning he brought me NJ Jazz magazine and there you were but even more important we have a link in our lives. Could you please send us your schedule of appearances as we both would love to hear you live. You have a wonderful talent and I am glad you persevered with it.

For various reasons -- conflicts, weather, etc. -- I've missed most of your
recent shows, but I made it to the program at the Newark Museum today "Just

it
ended to get to work, but I had a great time.

they were recognized by you. You make us all feel so at home every time we
